Just five months after the RFNS Puamau ran aground in the Fulaga Passage, its replacement, the RFNS Timo, faced damages from a docking incident on Thursday while attempting to berth at the Walu Bay Navy Pier. This vessel, a gift from the Australian government, was brought in from Australia to replace the recently decommissioned RFNS Puamau, which sustained significant damage after hitting a reef in June.
During Thursday’s operations, RFNS Timo experienced minor damage to its port-side stern, above the waterline. According to Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, the incident was attributed to a combination of gusty winds and limited docking space due to nearby commercial vessels. Commodore Tawake mentioned that the possibility of unprofessional conduct is also being considered, as several crew members were reportedly intoxicated during the incident.
In light of this, Commodore Tawake indicated that the navy is taking accountability seriously. Those involved in any alleged misconduct have been detained, and a formal investigation is underway to better understand the circumstances and address any shortcomings. He assured that within 24 hours of the incident, navy engineers had already started assessments and repairs, which are nearing completion. This will enable RFNS Timo to regain full operational readiness shortly.
Furthermore, the navy is reviewing its operational protocols and crew training to enhance procedures and mitigate the risk of future incidents. Commodore Tawake expressed deep gratitude towards the Australian government for its continued support through the Vuvale Partnership, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement in training, professionalism, and discipline within maritime operations. He confirmed that despite the recent challenges, the vessel’s structural integrity remains intact, ensuring that it is still fully operational.
This incident underscores the complexities faced in maritime operations but also highlights the commitment to safety and professionalism within the Republic of Fiji Navy. With ongoing reviews and improvements, there is a hopeful outlook for enhanced practices that prioritize the safety of personnel and equipment.
