Residents of Navunikabi Village in Namosi have firmly expressed their opposition to a proposed hydroelectric dam project planned by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL). This morning, over 100 villagers traveled to Suva to submit letters of objection to the Office of the Prime Minister, the Opposition, and the Australian High Commission, highlighting their concerns about the lack of consultation and the potential impacts on their land and natural resources.
Elder Mareta Naiadi voiced the community’s displeasure over the inadequate communication regarding the project, stating that the information provided has been unclear and insufficient. The residents fear that the hydroelectric project will threaten their environment, livelihoods, and ancestral ties to the land. They have conducted several protests with themes such as “No to Hydro” and “Please don’t take us away from our land,” showcasing their commitment to protecting their community and the ecosystem along the river.
Archbishop Peter Loy Chong of the Catholic Church joined the villagers in their protest, urging the government to respect the wishes of the local population. He emphasized that the matter transcends environmental concerns and must be viewed through the lens of social justice.
Previous reports have noted similar sentiments among residents regarding the hydro dam project, which is estimated to cost $200 million and spans three proposed sites in the area. Concerns have been raised about possible relocations and the environmental degradation that may result from the dam’s construction. Community leaders have criticized the consultation process and expressed their determination to safeguard their cultural heritage and natural resources.
It is vital that the voices of the Navunikabi residents are considered seriously in any discussions surrounding the hydro dam project. Their collective response reflects a broader concern about the need for genuine dialogue and collaboration in development projects that impact local communities and their environment.
As discussions surrounding this issue continue, there is hope that a solution can be reached that respects the rights and voices of the people of Navunikabi, allowing the community to thrive while addressing their concerns about development.
