In an exciting development for the 2024 Flick Hygiene Pacific Community Cup, first-timers Navua are entering the tournament with a completely local squad. The competition kicks off today at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
Coach Saiyad Ali expressed his enthusiasm for providing valuable international experience to the younger players. He emphasized the importance of facing teams that include professional and semi-professional athletes, which will serve as a significant learning opportunity for his squad.
While aiming to make a mark in the tournament and create potential upsets, Ali’s main priority remains to give younger players the chance to gain experience on the field. Several of these young talents, who missed the recent Inter District Championship due to examinations, have rejoined the team and are expected to feature prominently in their group matches.
Star players such as national representatives Filipe Baravilala, Thomas Dunn, and Rahul Krishna will lead the Navua campaign, along with teammates Kolinio Sivoki, Zainal Ali, Matthew Charitar, Simione Damuni, and goalkeeper Jovilisi Borisi. However, the team will notably miss the Solomon Islands trio of Jackson Wale, Ali Mekawir, and Jared Rongosulia, who have returned home for holidays.
Navua will begin their tournament journey against the AuFFI All Stars at 6:15 PM today, setting the stage for an exhilarating start to their campaign.
This decision to field an all-local team signifies a commitment to nurturing homegrown talent and illustrates a focus on building a strong foundation for the future. By prioritizing youth development, Navua aims not only to leave an impression in this tournament but also to strengthen its squad for upcoming competitive events.
As fans rally behind Navua, there’s a sense of optimism that this fresh approach can inspire the players and foster a new generation of football talent in the region.
