Plans are underway to officially designate Navua as a town, a move confirmed by Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa during a recent interview. The initiative aims to make Navua Fiji’s 14th town and has been in progress since 2016, reflecting the growing need for improved infrastructure and services in the rapidly developing area.

Minister Nalumisa emphasized that enhancing essential facilities is a core focus, including upgrades to roads, markets, and bus stands to fulfill the criteria for township status. He noted that as the population grows, so too will the demand for well-equipped emergency response services. The introduction of a new fire station in Navua is expected to enhance response times in emergencies, such as fires or natural disasters.

With better emergency services in place, Navua is anticipated to become a more attractive location for investments, fostering economic growth and ensuring the welfare of its residents. Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua has expressed his gratitude for the government’s commitment to this project, highlighting the essential conversations he has had with the Indo-Fijian community regarding further developments, including plans for a new crematorium and mortuary.

Ratu Suliano noted the region’s potential growth, making a comparison to the Suva-Nausori corridor, stating, “At least Navua is growing… we have to be prepared.” His comments echo a sense of hope for the community’s future as infrastructure and amenities continue to develop, paving the way for a more prosperous and secure living environment for all residents.

The positive outlook surrounding Navua’s transition to a town reflects the government’s broader efforts to promote economic development and improve living standards across Fiji. This initiative serves as a reminder that with careful planning and commitment from local leaders, communities can thrive and evolve to meet the needs of their citizens.
