Navua’s hopes of advancing to the semi-finals of the BBC/Wonderchick Fiji FACT tournament in 1991 were dashed following a 1-2 defeat against Suva. In their third pool match, where they initially showcased strong performance, Navua took an early lead. Ratu Suliano Matanitobua’s team led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a goal set up by playmaker Kolaia Nabaro.

However, the second half proved challenging for Navua. Suva’s David Low leveled the score early in the second period with a surprising lob that caught Navua goalkeeper Timoci Alui off guard. Just a few minutes later, a follow-up attempt from Suva’s skipper, Maretino Nemani, slipped through Alui’s legs, solidifying Suva’s lead.

Despite their best efforts, including near misses from Ratu Suliano and Kolaia Nabaro that were thwarted by Suva’s goalkeeper Josaia Rabonu, Navua couldn’t find the equalizer. The match concluded with tensions escalating leading to yellow cards issued to players from both teams.

This match serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of sports, highlighting that even dominant teams can succumb to unexpected turns. Navua showcased their potential with a strong first half, and with the right adjustments, they may very well bounce back in future tournaments.

Overall, while this defeat was disappointing, it underscores the team’s talent and the promise of future successes in competitive football.
