After 36 years of operating under challenging conditions at a subpar facility, firefighters and officers in Navua can now proudly call a new, state-of-the-art fire station home. The $2.5 million facility was officially inaugurated by Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matonitabua and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa, marking a significant milestone for emergency services in the region.
Puamau Sowane, the Chief Executive of the National Fire Authority (NFA), shed light on the difficulties faced at the old station, likening it to a penitentiary due to its inadequate conditions. He praised the firefighters for their unwavering dedication and professionalism despite the limitations imposed by their previous environment. The transition to a modern facility represents not just an upgrade in infrastructure, but a commendable investment in both the well-being of firefighters and community safety.
Minister Nalumisa emphasized the essential role of the station, noting that Navua firefighters responded to 17 property fires, 18 small fires, 37 road accident rescues, four swift water rescues, and one natural disaster rescue in the last five years alone. The new facility is expected to serve around 7,000 residents and support 149 commercial and 11 industrial businesses within the Navua boundaries.
Ratu Suliano Matonitabua expressed gratitude for the new facility, underlining its potential to enhance safety for the communities of Namosi and Serua. He stated, “The vanua of Namosi and Serua will now have a firefighting team ready to respond to road accidents, providing life-saving interventions when they are most needed.”
This development aligns with ongoing efforts across Fiji to bolster fire safety services, including recent upgrades at various fire stations and investments in new facilities particularly in response to the increasing demand for emergency services in high-traffic areas.
Overall, this new fire station not only stands as a testament to the commitment towards improving public safety but also assures residents of a more responsive and effective fire service. With continued investment in emergency response infrastructure, there’s a hopeful outlook for a safer, more resilient community in Navua and beyond.
