After enduring 36 years of operating in inadequate conditions, the firefighters and officers in Navua now have a modern fire station to call home. The $2.5 million facility was inaugurated by Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matonitabua and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa, signifying a crucial development for emergency services in the area.
Puamau Sowane, the Chief Executive of the National Fire Authority (NFA), highlighted the challenges faced at the old station, comparing its conditions to those of a prison. He commended the firefighters for their unwavering commitment and professionalism despite the limitations they faced. The new state-of-the-art facility symbolizes not just an upgrade in infrastructure but also a significant investment in the welfare of firefighters and the safety of the community.
Minister Nalumisa pointed out the vital role the station plays, revealing that Navua firefighters responded to numerous emergencies in the past five years, including 17 property fires and multiple road accident rescues. The new facility is expected to serve approximately 7,000 residents and support a variety of commercial and industrial businesses.
Ratu Suliano Matonitabua expressed gratitude for the new fire station, emphasizing its importance for enhancing safety in the communities of Namosi and Serua. He noted that the firefighting team will be better positioned to respond effectively to emergencies, delivering life-saving interventions when necessary.
This development is part of a broader effort across Fiji to improve fire safety services, with recent upgrades and new facilities catering to the growing demand for emergency services in areas with high traffic.
The establishment of this new fire station not only underscores a dedication to enhancing public safety but also reassures residents that they will benefit from a more efficient and responsive fire service. With ongoing investment in emergency response infrastructure, there is optimism for a safer and more resilient future for Navua and its surrounding communities.
