Navua started their National Football League campaign on a high note, securing a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Nadroga at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Following a competitive match, Navua’s resilient performance has placed them in a promising position early in the season.
Despite fielding a squad that included several key January transfers, Nadroga initially seized the lead with a stunning long-range effort from Taniela Raubula. However, Navua responded with determination, as new signing Sairusi Nalaubu consistently threatened the Nadroga defense. The equalizer came just before halftime from Solomon Islands import Ali Mekawir, who unleashed a powerful shot from 25 yards, leveling the score at 1-1.
The second half began with a swift strike from Isake Naduvu, who connected brilliantly with a cross from Mosese Baleinagaga to give Navua a 2-1 lead. Nadroga pressed forward in search of an equalizer and threatened on several occasions, but they were thwarted by the impressive goalkeeping of Jovilisi Borisi.
In the dying moments, substitute Zainal Ali sealed the deal for Navua, scoring a third goal deep into injury time to confirm the win. Coach Saiyad Ali expressed his pride in the team’s effort, acknowledging the absence of key players while also complimenting Nadroga on their strong performance. “Taking three points from their home ground is an achievement for us,” said Ali.
In another match of the day, Nasinu pulled off a surprising upset by defeating Lautoka 2-0 at the Uprising Sports Complex, thanks to goals from Ronish Singh and Mikah Dau.
With these results, both Navua and Nasinu have set an exciting tone for the league, demonstrating their competitive spirit and the potential for further surprises as the season progresses.
