The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced the temporary closure of the Navua Hospital Inpatient and Birthing Unit due to concerns regarding the building’s structural integrity. Hospital staff first raised these issues in May, leading to the decision to close the unit while infrastructure assessments and renovations are conducted.

In the meantime, maternity services have been shifted to the Administration Block within the outpatient building, ensuring that essential health services continue uninterrupted. Patients who require ongoing inpatient care or specialist obstetric services are being referred to the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital for further assistance.

The Ministry has ensured that the Navua community is informed about these temporary adjustments to health services. Typically, the Navua Hospital reports an average of 15 deliveries each month. Since the relocation of services, a total of 289 patients have been safely stabilized, admitted, transferred, or discharged.

To address the building’s issues, the Ministry is collaborating closely with the Ministry of Public Works and other relevant partners. Additional engineering assessments are anticipated in the coming weeks to fully outline the necessary repairs needed for the hospital to resume regular operations.

This proactive response aims to maintain the safety and well-being of patients while ensuring continuous access to vital health care services in the community during this critical time.
