Navua’s journey in the 2024 Flick Hygiene Pacific Community Cup came to a close after a disappointing 3-1 defeat against the Manukau All Stars at Churchill Park in Lautoka. This elimination occurred during a crucial Group A match, where the stakes were high for both teams.
The game started with an early advantage for Manukau All Stars, as Ni-Vanuatu player Alex Saniel scored in the 15th minute. Captain Jack Caunter increased their dominance by adding another goal before halftime, leaving Navua in a challenging position. The situation worsened for Navua when Garbhan Coughlan, the tournament’s leading scorer, extended Manukau’s lead further early in the second half.
Navua faced additional challenges when their goalkeeper, Jovilisi Borisi, received a red card for violent conduct, reducing the team to ten players. Despite their struggles, Navua’s defender Filipe Baravilala managed to score a consolation goal late in the match, demonstrating the team’s determination even in adversity.
With this victory, the Manukau All Stars secured a spot in the semifinals of the tournament. The remaining semifinal spot will be contested between the host team Lautoka and the AuFFI All Stars, who are set to meet in the last fixture of the day.
While Navua has exited the tournament, they showcased resilience and fighting spirit throughout, paving the way for potential growth and development in future competitions. As they regroup, fans can remain hopeful that the team will emerge stronger in the seasons to come.
