The Riverbank Protection Works project in Naviyago Village, Lautoka, is making significant strides, with 70 percent of the work now completed. This initiative, undertaken by Prem’s Civil Engineering Pte Limited at a cost of $681,970.70, is crucial for protecting the Naviyago/Vitogo Riverbank from erosion while enhancing the community’s resilience against flooding.
The construction involves the installation of geotextile material and strategic placement of boulders along the river’s edge. Currently, 175.16 meters of boulders and 180.12 meters of geotextile filter material have been successfully installed upstream. Although the project has encountered minor delays, it is expected to be completed within the designated 180 calendar days, with just 21 days remaining until finalization.
Upon completion, the riverbank protection measures will substantially mitigate erosion, safeguard surrounding farmland, and bolster the safety and livelihoods of residents in the Naviyago community. This aligns with broader goals evident in similar environmental initiatives across Fiji, aimed at addressing the growing threats posed by climate change and extreme weather conditions.
Recently, other infrastructure projects have also highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing community resilience. For instance, significant work is underway for a seawall in Navolau, Rakiraki, designed to protect against coastal erosion exacerbated by climate change. Despite delays caused by unstable weather conditions, efforts are being made to expedite construction through additional machinery and local labor involvement.
These parallel initiatives underscore a proactive approach by the government and local authorities to invest in vital infrastructure, ultimately enhancing safety and quality of life for residents in vulnerable regions. As Fijian communities confront the realities of climate change, these projects serve as beacons of hope, exemplifying resilience and determination in safeguarding their future against environmental challenges.
