The Nawamati Point Lighthouse on Beqa Island, a critical navigational aid for maritime vessels, is set for refurbishment after facing years of neglect. The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has secured a $200,000 contract with Dive Centre (Fiji) Pte Limited for the restoration works, officially signed by MSAF’s Chief Executive Officer, Joweli Cawaki, and Dive Centre’s Director, Charles Julian.
The refurbishment process is anticipated to take around 12 weeks and is part of MSAF’s larger initiative to bolster maritime safety and infrastructure throughout Fiji. The lighthouse has been under-utilized due to its deteriorating condition, but the upcoming upgrade will restore its functionality, ensuring safer navigation for vessels in the area.
In line with these efforts, MSAF is also conducting evaluations of various jetties and facilities, addressing safety concerns including reported deficiencies in lighting as highlighted by Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau. These proactive steps demonstrate the government’s dedication to enhancing maritime infrastructure and promoting economic growth by elevating safety standards.
The imminent upgrades to the Nawamati Point Lighthouse and associated maritime facilities foster hope for improved local and international shipping safety, potentially reinforcing Fiji’s reputation in global maritime operations.
These initiatives not only aim to create a safer and more efficient maritime environment but also reflect a commitment to sustainable development and increased maritime safety awareness within local communities and stakeholders. The continued investment in maritime infrastructure can pave the way for economic opportunities and growth in tourism and trade, benefiting the nation as a whole.
