Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged the complexities of managing a coalition government as he reflected on its second year in power. He recognized the challenges, criticisms, and setbacks the coalition has faced over the past two years, citing similar struggles of coalition governments in countries like France and New Zealand.
Rabuka expressed gratitude towards members of the coalition government, specifically praising the efforts of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) and the National Federation Party (NFP) for their collaboration with the People’s Alliance Party (PAP). He indicated that the journey has not been without difficulties, noting that individual ministers have faced challenges with civil servants, some of which have been publicly scrutinized.
Despite these hurdles, Rabuka emphasized the importance of ensuring the government continues to function effectively and meet the objectives set for the current year. He stated, “The issue is keeping the government working and achieving objectives; that is more important than just trying to keep the government together.”
In a climate where coalition stability appears to be in question globally, Rabuka’s determination and appreciation for collaboration instill hope that with cooperative efforts, the coalition can navigate its challenges and achieve its goals.
This perspective highlights the resilience and commitment of the coalition, suggesting that, with teamwork and focus, progress is indeed possible, even in the face of difficulties.
