Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health, explained that Fiji relies solely on imported pharmaceuticals, which are affected by various supply chain challenges.

He emphasized that even as the government has increased its budget for medicines and medical products, delays in receiving supplies are attributed to logistical problems, including transportation issues, documentation requirements, and unforeseen events like strikes at ports internationally. Dr. Tudravu stated, “If there’s a strike in a port somewhere, then it gets held, and these are all the supply chain factors that impact how we receive our supplies on time.”

To address these challenges, Dr. Tudravu noted the importance of ongoing communication with suppliers, often requiring coordination across different time zones to minimize delays. In the event of a supply shortage, private hospitals are contacted for medical testing, with costs varying based on existing agreements.

He expressed gratitude for the government’s continuous budget increases for medicines, stating, “We’re fortunate that the Government has continued to increase the budgetary allocation for medicines and medical products.” Despite the supply chain hurdles, the government is exploring alternative sourcing options and maintaining close contact with suppliers to manage the shortages effectively.
