Incoming President Kalafi Moala shares insights on the Pacific Islands News Association’s history and future in light of recent challenges outlined in the Pacific Islands Media Freedom (PIMF) Index 2023. The report, issued by the Pacific Freedom Forum (PFF), highlights significant issues facing regional media, identifying economic pressures and sociocultural strains as the leading challenges for Pacific newsrooms.

The PIMF Index, launched during the Niue Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) Summit, focuses on the importance of media freedom, stressing that without it, the integrity of storytelling is jeopardized. PFF Forum Chair Robert Luke Iroga emphasized the organization’s commitment to protecting the rights enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which advocates for freedom of expression and information.

The media landscape has increasingly become vulnerable to corporate influence, where financial interests often dictate content, leading to a concerning shift towards a profit-driven model rather than one focused on truth. The growing dependence on external funding, particularly from Western nations amid geopolitical tensions, raises questions about media independence and the authenticity of narratives conveyed.

Moala underscores the necessity of maintaining media independence while accepting funding, urging for partnerships that align with the region’s values and goals. He warns against the increasing control exerted by external donors over media operations and narratives, resulting in the misrepresentation of Pacific cultures and stories primarily intended for outside audiences.

Despite the founding of PINA 50 years ago, many regions within the Pacific remain unrepresented, particularly in Polynesia and Micronesia. Moala calls for PINA to prioritize inclusivity in the coming year, suggesting that subregional gatherings and collaborations with emerging organizations are vital for strengthening media across the Pacific.

The participation of notable media figures from the diaspora during the summit offers hope for better representation and collaboration. Moala encourages a collective effort towards nurturing the region and establishing meaningful partnerships without compromising independence.

This article serves as the second part of a series exploring media challenges in the Pacific Islands.
