Navigating Dreams: A Mother’s Inspiring Journey in Travel and Empowerment

Bulou Ateca Grace Qolouvaki Sugutanaivalu Bola, a proud mother from the picturesque island of Vanuabalavu in Fiji, is an inspiring figure whose journey exemplifies resilience and ambition. With a lifelong passion for travel, she has carved out a successful career in the cruise industry, highlighting her experiences and dedication to both family and professional growth.

Growing up in the village of Lomaloma, recognized as Fiji’s first modern town, Ms. Bola learned the values of service and purpose from her family. At 22, she embarked on a journey at sea that shaped her identity. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led her to pivot her career, transitioning from ocean voyages to the skies as a cabin crew member with Fiji Airways, following in her mother’s footsteps.

Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, Ms. Bola embraced this new chapter. But as life settled, the call of the sea once again drew her back. “Sometimes it’s best to drop anchor and enjoy the view from home,” she said, as she made the heartfelt decision to prioritize her role as a full-time mom.

Her career has evolved significantly; after leading the cruise ship department at Rosie Holidays, she returned to the ocean in a role as Assistant Destinations Manager. This position allows her to fulfill her professional dreams while maintaining a balance with her family life, ensuring she can return home to her “small but mighty crew of kids” between contracts.

Ms. Bola’s love for travel was ignited by her mother’s legacy in the airline industry. Throughout her pursuit of education, she managed to balance part-time work as a receptionist while studying tourism and hospitality management. This hard work paid off when she was invited to join P&O Australia, marking the beginning of her journey in the cruise sector.

Through her experiences, Ms. Bola advocates fiercely for women’s empowerment. She emphasizes the importance of pursuing dreams, regardless of the obstacles. “The world is vast and filled with opportunities; nothing should stand in the way of your dreams,” she encourages others, underscoring the potential for women to thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Additionally, Ms. Bola’s story resonates with fellow women in the tourism and hospitality industry, akin to others such as Irinieta Naqolo, assistant manager at the Sheraton Fiji Resort, who also underscores the importance of resilience and community support. Their journeys highlight a shared commitment to uplift one another and pave the way for future generations of female leaders.

As International Women’s Month is celebrated, Ms. Bola’s empowering message encourages young women to remain adaptable, grateful for opportunities, and pursue their dreams with passion. Her narrative serves not only as a celebration of personal achievements but as an inspiration for all, particularly women navigating their paths in resilience and perseverance within the travel and hospitality sectors.
