Women are increasingly taking their place in the maritime industry, a sector that has traditionally been dominated by men. Despite the progress made, significant hurdles remain for women in this field. Leaders in the industry are advocating for immediate actions to enhance visibility, secure essential funding, and elevate female voices in crucial decision-making processes.

Jane Koi, President of the Women in Maritime Association (WIMA), emphasizes that one of the primary issues is the lack of funding and support necessary to empower women in the maritime sector. Koi asserts the importance of data collection to understand the current representation of women in the workforce and to advocate for initiatives that can facilitate their development.

A growing movement, exemplified by WIMA’s mentorship and data collection initiatives, aims to empower the new generation of women to not only enter the maritime sector but also assume leadership roles. This aligns with broader trends observed in Fiji, which show a significant transformation in various industries as women increasingly take on leading roles.

For instance, similar efforts in Fiji’s maritime and professional sectors demonstrate a collective push towards inclusivity and empowerment for women. Joeli Cawaki, Chief Executive of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, notes that women are excelling in managerial and technical roles, paving the way for their future generations. The narratives from both WIMA and the broader Fiji context reveal an encouraging landscape for women’s empowerment and representation across different fields, which suggests that ongoing initiatives could lead to a more inclusive economy.

These efforts resonate with the growing acknowledgment that fostering women’s participation not only benefits individuals but also enhances community engagement and economic growth. As the maritime industry and other sectors continue to evolve, there is hope that persistent advocacy and empowerment initiatives will lead to greater gender equality and representation in leadership roles, contributing to the overall resilience and dynamism of Fiji’s economy.
