Navatu Secondary School Makes History in Rugby League!

Navatu Secondary School has reached a historic milestone by making it to the national quarter-finals of the Vodafone Super Deans for the first time in its 26-year history. The under-19 team secured their spot after a closely contested playoff match against St. John’s Cawaci, winning 18-16 in Labasa two weeks ago.

The team enjoys strong support from its community, which includes nine villages that form Navatu, alumni, and the chief of Tamavua Village where they are currently staying. Principal Ilikena Tomasi expressed pride in the team’s achievement, emphasizing that they have established a new legacy for the school.

“Last year we made it to the playoffs in Labasa, but this year we have gone a step further, marking a historic moment for us,” said Tomasi. “We are proud of the boys; they have made history for themselves, their school, and their families. This is the first time in our 26-year existence that we have advanced this far.”

As they prepare for the national competition, Tomasi acknowledged the heightened level of challenge that lays ahead. The team has been focusing on mental preparation in the days leading up to their match, as this will be a key aspect of their performance.

Navatu will face the southern zone’s top seed, Naitasiri Secondary School, known for its strong rugby league program from Term 1. “It won’t be easy because we know that Naitasiri is the champion,” Tomasi remarked. “We respect them, but we are hopeful for a win.”

The match between Navatu Secondary School and Naitasiri will take place tomorrow at 2:45 PM at Buckhurst Park in Laucala Bay, Suva.
