The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is gearing up for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Despite facing various challenges during their training, the team remains optimistic and determined to succeed.

Team official Ilairo Belo highlighted the resourcefulness of the players, who have taken it upon themselves to organize fundraising efforts to cover transportation and accommodation costs for the upcoming three-day event. Their commitment to fundraising, alongside a rigorous training regimen that has been ongoing for three weeks, underscores their drive to compete effectively despite the adversities they face.

The team has had to train under difficult conditions, utilizing makeshift equipment like tires due to a lack of access to proper training facilities. Recent flooding in the area has further complicated preparations, affecting their usual training grounds and local infrastructure, including a bridge to the Ba River.

This tournament marks the second participation of the Navala Youth team, and they have set their sights on progressing to the playoffs this year. Belo emphasizes a focused mindset and strong communication among the players as crucial factors for success, especially given that they will be up against some of the best local teams and international challengers.

Additionally, Belo has advised the players to stay away from negative influences, encouraging them to view the tournament as a platform to showcase their talent, which could potentially lead to professional rugby opportunities. The bond among the team members, many of whom are related and come from the same village, adds a unique strength to their teamwork.

Belo is also calling on the Navala community to rally behind the team, emphasizing that collective support is vital as they represent their village. The journey of the Navala Youth rugby team is not just about athletic competition; it embodies the transformative power of sports, fostering personal growth and unity within the community.

As they approach the tournament, the Navala Youth team stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with resilience, dedication, and community backing, they can achieve their dreams both on and off the field. Their story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes and a reminder of the strength found within supportive communities.
