The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is earnestly preparing for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament. Scheduled to take place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, the team remains hopeful despite facing various challenges during their preparations.
Team official Ilairo Belo highlighted the resourcefulness of the players, who have independently organized fundraising efforts to cover transportation and accommodation costs for the three-day event. They have been training for three weeks, often under difficult conditions, including adverse weather and limited access to proper training facilities. The flooding in the region has complicated accessibility to their usual training grounds and impacted local infrastructure, including a bridge connecting their village to the Ba River.
Belo noted that the players often train with makeshift equipment, like tires, reflecting their resilience and determination. They have also taken on odd jobs, such as farm work, to fund their participation in the tournament, showcasing their commitment to their sport and community.
This will mark the team’s second participation in the Coral Coast 7s, and their aim is to progress at least to the playoffs this year. Belo emphasized the importance of a focused mindset and strong communication on the field, especially when competing against some of the best local and invitational teams.
In a positive message to the players, he encouraged them to avoid negative influences and urged them to see the tournament as an opportunity to showcase their talent, which could lead to professional rugby careers. The bond within the team, with many players being related and hailing from the same village, enhances their unity and strength.
Belo is also calling on the Navala community to rally behind the team, emphasizing the significance of communal support as they represent their village. Their journey embodies the transformative potential of sports, fostering personal growth and communal pride. With hard work, determination, and support, the Navala Youth sevens rugby team is aiming to create a hopeful narrative as they head into the tournament, aspiring to inspire not just themselves but their entire community.
