The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is gearing up for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, set to take place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Team official Ilairo Belo has expressed optimism despite facing various challenges throughout their preparations.
Belo mentioned that the team organized their own fundraising efforts to cover transportation and accommodation costs for the three-day event. This determination shows a remarkable commitment to their goal, even in the face of adverse weather and inadequate training facilities. The players have had to improvise training methods, often using tires for workouts due to the absence of proper gym equipment. This resilience highlights their ability to adapt and maintain focus during tough times.
Training for the tournament began three weeks ago, and the youngsters have complemented their efforts by taking on odd jobs, such as farm work, to fund their participation. Recent flooding has complicated their preparations, affecting both their training grounds and local infrastructure, including a bridge that connects their village to the Ba River.
This year marks the second participation of the Navala Youth team in the Coral Coast 7s, and their aim is to reach the playoffs. Belo emphasized the importance of mental focus and effective communication during the games, especially given that they will be up against top local teams and international competitors. He also urged players to stay clear of negative influences, advising them to channel their energy into showcasing their talent for a chance at professional opportunities in rugby.
A significant aspect of the Navala Youth team’s strength lies in their bond, as many players come from the same village, enhancing their teamwork and camaraderie. Belo has called on the community of Navala Ba to rally behind the team and show support during the tournament, emphasizing the importance of collective encouragement from their village.
The journey of the Navala Youth rugby team is a powerful reminder of how sports can unite a community while fostering personal growth and aspirations. With their dedication and the backing of their supporters, they are working toward not only achieving success on the field but also paving a path toward brighter futures through rugby.
