Navala Youth Sevens: Against All Odds at Coral Coast 7s!

The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is gearing up with determination for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, which will take place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Despite facing numerous challenges, including adverse weather conditions and limited access to proper training facilities, the team remains optimistic about their chances this year.

Team official Ilairo Belo highlighted the resilience and resourcefulness of the players, who have organized their own fundraising efforts to cover transportation and accommodation expenses for the tournament. With three weeks of intensive preparation behind them, the players have also taken odd jobs, including farm work, to finance their participation. The recent flooding has impacted their usual training grounds and local infrastructure, including a bridge connecting their village to the Ba River, but the team has persisted by utilizing makeshift training equipment like tires.

This tournament marks the second participation of the Navala Youth team, and they aim to advance to the playoffs, building on their experience from last year. Belo emphasizes the importance of maintaining a focused mindset and strong communication on the field, noting that they will face frequent challenges from both local contenders and international teams.

In an encouraging message, Belo has advised the players to avoid negative influences and instead focus on showcasing their talents, as the tournament presents an opportunity for potential professional rugby careers. He noted the unique bond among the team members, many of whom share familial ties and hail from the same village, which strengthens their teamwork.

Belo is also calling on the villagers of Navala Ba to come out and support the team during the tournament, recognizing that communal backing plays a critical role in boosting morale and performance.

The story of the Navala Youth rugby team serves as an inspiring narrative of resilience and community spirit, highlighting how sports provide a platform for personal growth and aspirations. As they approach the tournament, the team’s dedication exemplifies hope for a brighter future in rugby and beyond, aiming to inspire not only themselves but also their entire community.
