The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is enthusiastically preparing for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, which will be held from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Despite the significant challenges they have faced, including severe weather and inadequate training facilities, the team remains hopeful about their performance.

Team official Ilairo Belo highlighted the players’ resilience and determination, noting that they have organized their own fundraising efforts to cover transportation and accommodation expenses for the tournament. Many team members have taken on odd jobs, such as farm work, to fund their participation. This dedication reflects a remarkable commitment from the young athletes amid the difficulties created by recent flooding, which has affected both their training grounds and local infrastructure, including a bridge connecting their village to the Ba River.

This year marks the Navala Youth’s second time competing in the Coral Coast 7s. Belo expressed the team’s aspiration to reach the playoffs this time, emphasizing the importance of mental focus and strong communication during matches, especially given the tough competition they will face from top local and international teams.

Belo also underscored the significance of community support, inviting villagers of Navala Ba to rally behind their team as they represent the spirit of their community.
