The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is eagerly preparing for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, which is set to take place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Team official Ilairo Belo remains optimistic despite the various hurdles they have faced during their training.
In a show of determination, the team has organized their own fundraising activities to cover transportation and accommodation expenses for the three-day event. Their commitment to this endeavor comes amid adverse weather conditions and limited access to proper training facilities. Players have resorted to using tires for workouts, showcasing their resourcefulness and ability to adapt as they prepare for the competition.
Over the past three weeks, the players have been diligently training while navigating challenges such as recent flooding, which has affected their training grounds and the bridge connecting their village to the Ba River. Many team members have taken on odd jobs, including farm work, to fund their participation in the tournament.
This year marks the Navala Youth team’s second appearance in the Coral Coast 7s, and their goal is to advance to the playoffs. Belo underscores the importance of mental focus and effective communication during matches, especially given the stiff competition from both top local teams and international invitees.
Belo has also encouraged players to steer clear of negative influences, advising them to concentrate on showcasing their talents during the tournament. He pointed out that the strong bond among the players, many of whom are related and hail from the same village, fortifies their teamwork.
Belo is rallying the Navala community to come out and support the team, stressing that their collective encouragement is vital as they represent not just the team but the spirit of their village.
The journey of the Navala Youth rugby team reflects a powerful narrative of resilience and hope, illustrating how sports can foster personal growth and unite a community. With their dedication and the backing of their supporters, the team aims to create a promising impact, not only aspiring to success on the field but also inspiring future generations in their pursuit of athletic excellence and life opportunities.
