The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is eagerly preparing for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, despite facing significant challenges. Team official Ilairo Belo emphasized the players’ commitment, noting their efforts to fundraise independently to cover transportation and accommodation costs for the event, which runs from January 16 to 18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

Belo acknowledged the obstacles the team has encountered, including inclement weather that has disrupted their usual training regimen. The players often train using makeshift equipment like tires, showcasing their resilience and ability to adapt. They have been training diligently for three weeks and even took on odd jobs, such as farm work, to support their expenses for the tournament.

This year’s competition will be the team’s second appearance, and the goal is to progress to the playoffs, which would mark a significant achievement. Belo highlighted the importance of mental focus and strong communication on the field, especially since they will be competing against top local teams and international invitational teams.

In a bid to discourage negative influences, Belo urged the players to avoid drugs and crime, instead encouraging them to seize this opportunity to showcase their talent. He noted the unique bond within the team, as most players hail from the same village, fostering a spirit of unity that strengthens their performance.

Belo also called on the Navala community to come out and support the team during the tournament, emphasizing that collective support can greatly boost their morale.
