Just five months after the RFNS Puamau ran aground in Fulaga Passage, its successor, the RFNS Timo, has encountered issues following a docking incident on Thursday at Walu Bay Navy Pier. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division was in the process of bringing the ship from Australia, as the RFNS Timo is a new addition gifted by the Australian government to replace the $18 million RFNS Puamau, which was damaged in June.

During the berthing operation, the RFNS Timo sustained minor damage to its port-side stern above the waterline. Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, stated that the incident was influenced by strong winds and limited docking space affected by nearby commercial vessels. He also mentioned that unprofessional conduct might have played a role, with reports that some crew members were allegedly intoxicated during the operation.

In response to the situation, Commodore Tawake emphasized the navy’s commitment to accountability, revealing that individuals suspected of unprofessional conduct have been detained, and a formal investigation is underway to pinpoint the precise circumstances and identify any areas of improvement. Navy engineers conducted a detailed assessment and repairs within 24 hours of the incident, which are now almost complete, allowing the RFNS Timo to soon resume full operational capabilities.

The Commodore expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from the Australian Government under the Vuvale Partnership, reinforcing the importance of rigorous training and professionalism in naval operations. He assured that despite the recent challenges, the structural integrity of the RFNS Timo is intact and the vessel remains operational.

This incident highlights the complexities of maritime operations while also serving as an opportunity for growth and improvement within the naval forces, showcasing a proactive approach to training and protocols aimed at preventing future incidents.

In summary, while the RFNS Timo has faced setbacks shortly after its commissioning, swift action and a commitment to accountability demonstrate the navy’s dedication to maintaining high standards and operational readiness. The continued support from international partners like Australia also provides a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji’s maritime capabilities.
