Nausori’s Tebara Festival: A Celebration of Unity and Culture

On September 22, 1984, the Tebara festival was introduced with the theme “Tebara embraces all.” The festivities kicked off in Nausori with a parade featuring the Royal Fiji Military Forces Band alongside the LDS Technical College marching band. The event was officially inaugurated by Hafiz Khan, the Chief Administrator of the Nausori Town council.

Among the festival’s highlights was an interfaith service that brought together Christian, Hindu, and Islamic communities, held at Ratu Cakobau Park on September 23. Each night featured an open-air dance with performances by the Cava Brothers, followed by public judging of contestants at the park.

Wednesday was designated as Indian night, showcasing cultural dances such as bhagra, nagra, and kathak, along with an Indian drama and musical performances. The Pacificque night, featuring various islanders, was well-received by the Nausori audience, who enjoyed modern dance performances by Duffy King from the University of the South Pacific.

The Nausori Health Centre organized a baby show for local mothers. A significant turnout was anticipated for the festival’s final day, as spectators gathered along the streets to witness a float procession from Visama Rice Mill to Ratu Cakobau Park.

The crowning of Miss Tebara by Irene Jai Narayan, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, marked the main event of the festival at 7 PM. Additionally, the annual Tebara Ball was scheduled to take place at the Whistling Duck Club, where contestants and attendees could enjoy dining and dancing to the tunes of the Cava Brothers band.
