A hovercraft ferry service aimed at significantly reducing travel time between Nausori and Suva was proposed in 2019, but ultimately rejected. George Goundar, managing director of Goundar Shipping, expressed disappointment over the project’s dismissal, citing opposition from the previous government despite its potential benefits for daily commuters.
The hovercraft was designed to operate from Syria Park jetty in Nausori to the “Tiko jetty” at Suva, offering a reliable water-transport link that would remain unaffected by tidal conditions. Goundar highlighted that the vessel could carry approximately 200 passengers per trip and could run three to four times during peak hours. By providing a swift alternative, it could have alleviated the current road congestion, which often leads to travel times of about two and a half hours.
Goundar also raised concerns about the implications of lengthy commutes for families, noting that children may be left unsupervised after school due to the delays. In light of these issues, he has urged the government to reassess the possibility of introducing a water-link service, suggesting an open tender for any interested shipping companies.
The idea remains a hopeful solution for improving transportation infrastructure in Fiji, eyeing a future where travel between these major points is not only quicker but also more reliable and safe, particularly for families.
