Residents of Lakena Hill Number 2 in Nausori are increasingly alarmed by a large rubbish dump that has remained unattended for months, creating health and environmental hazards for local families. The situation has persisted since last year, despite the fact that residents are paying for weekly rubbish collection services.

Laisa Kocovanua, a long-time resident of the area, expressed her frustration, noting that the problem has worsened over time. “This big rubbish dump has been here for like half of last year to this year,” she stated, adding that the rubbish collection service they pay $3 weekly for is inconsistent. “Sometimes the rubbish lorry comes and takes the rubbish, but other weeks, I don’t know what happens.”

Kocovanua’s husband has taken it upon himself to clean the area, yet the problem continues to reoccur, often exacerbated during heavy rain when debris spills onto the road and blocks drains. “This is affecting our children, affecting the nearby houses,” she said, highlighting the adverse effects on their environment. The pervasive rubbish, particularly diapers, has led her to plead for assistance from local authorities.

Another resident, Nitesh Naidu, echoed her concerns about the health risks presented by the dump. “Most of the times we have to have our doors and windows closed,” he remarked, noting the stench and presence of pests such as flies and mosquitoes. His appeal to the Nausori Town Council reflects a collective desire among residents for immediate intervention to resolve the unsightly and hazardous situation.

The growing rubbish problems in Nausori highlight not only environmental neglect but also a need for community awareness about proper waste disposal. With combined efforts, the residents and local authorities can work towards restoring the area to a healthier and more pleasant living environment, fostering a sense of responsibility towards maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in shared spaces.
