A man in Nausori who claimed he was a victim of police brutality may now face additional legal repercussions after an investigation disproved his allegations. The Fiji Police Force revealed that a complaint was lodged on February 5, claiming officers from the Nausori Police Station assaulted him while responding to a report of public drinking. The complainant alleged that his mobile phone was also damaged during the incident.
In response, Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu instructed the Internal Affairs division to investigate the claims thoroughly. However, the inquiry found that the assault allegations were inconsistent with the evidence and statements collected. Four independent witnesses present at the scene confirmed that the man had not been assaulted and that he appeared to be intoxicated at the time. Additionally, two family members indicated they did not observe any such assault.
CCTV footage from the area corroborated the witnesses’ statements, further debunking the complainant’s claims. While a medical examination reported minor injuries, investigators determined these injuries did not align with the nature of an assault.
As a result of the incident, the man was initially charged with drinking in a public place and resisting arrest. He now faces the possibility of an additional charge for providing false information to authorities. Commissioner Tudravu emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that while individuals are free to express their views, it is crucial that their claims are based on factual evidence. He noted the growing toxicity of social media and the dangers posed by misinformation, which can have significant ramifications for individuals and families involved.
This case highlights the importance of responsible communication, especially in the age of digital platforms where misleading claims can spread rapidly.
