A man in Nausori, who claimed he was assaulted by police officers, is now facing the possibility of an additional charge for allegedly providing false information. This development follows an internal investigation that revealed inconsistencies in his assertions, which had previously garnered significant attention on social media for their allegations of police brutality.
The police have pointed out that following a complaint filed on February 5, 2023, regarding the supposed assault during a police response to public drinking, the man publicly detailed his claims. He had mentioned that his mobile phone was damaged in the incident. In response, the Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, initiated an investigation by the Internal Affairs Headquarters Division into the allegations against the officers involved.
However, the investigation yielded findings that contradicted the man’s claims. Statements from four civilian witnesses revealed that the individual appeared intoxicated at the time and that no assault occurred. Additionally, two family members testified that they did not observe any wrongdoing. Review of CCTV footage from the scene further confirmed that the allegations of assault were unfounded, while a medical examination indicated only minor injuries, which were deemed inconsistent with an assault situation.
As a result of his actions related to the incident, the complainant was charged for drinking in a public place and resisting arrest, and may now face a new charge of giving false information. Commissioner Tudravu emphasized the importance of truthful public discourse, stating that while the Fiji Police Force respects freedom of expression, consequences will follow if statements are proven to be criminally misleading.
He expressed concerns over the rising toxicity on social media, warning that individuals may feel emboldened to spread misinformation without understanding the potential repercussions. Tudravu reiterated that the police would intervene if necessary to uphold the integrity of the information shared in public forums, highlighting the potential harm that misinformation can cause within the community.
