Nauru is urgently advocating for enhanced climate action, recognizing the critical importance of women’s involvement in the global response to climate change. During a national statement at the CSW69 global session addressing women’s status, HE Lara Daniel, Nauru’s Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted climate change as “the single greatest threat” to the stability and well-being of Blue Pacific communities.

In response to challenges like rising sea levels and extreme weather events, Nauru has implemented a new Gender-Responsive Climate Change Policy. This initiative seeks to incorporate gender equality into climate action, disaster risk management, and pandemic responses, aligning with the nation’s National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS). Daniel emphasized that empowering women, who play a vital role in community resilience, is crucial for achieving sustainable solutions.

The ambassador called for increased international cooperation to ensure that gender-responsive climate initiatives receive the necessary funding and prioritization they deserve. Nauru’s dedication to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action underscores its commitment to empowering women and girls.

Recent efforts in Nauru include the promotion of a National Women’s Policy, Sexual Harassment Policy, and Child Protection policies, which aim to enhance legal protections and support services for survivors, alongside fostering societal changes through education and advocacy. “This challenge cannot be addressed by any nation alone,” she said, highlighting the importance of global partnerships and the sharing of best practices for effectively empowering women.

Notably, similar initiatives have been observed in the Marshall Islands, as discussed in recent UN dialogues. These discussions spotlighted the barriers posed by gender inequality and recognized the essential role of women in resilience efforts against climate change. The Marshall Islands, mirroring Nauru’s initiatives, advocates for strategic actions that promote women’s rights amidst climate challenges, showcasing a regional commitment to fostering gender equality in the face of these pressing issues.

Nauru’s initiatives reflect a promising path toward collaborative actions that position women at the forefront of addressing and mitigating climate impacts. As these nations strive together, they embody a hopeful vision for gender equality and sustainable development in the Pacific region.
