Former Nauru President Ludwig Derangadage Scotty has passed away at the age of 77 following a brief illness. The Nauru government confirmed his death occurred on Wednesday, with Scotty surrounded by family members during his final moments.
A state funeral is planned in his honor, with further details anticipated to be announced later this week.
Ludwig Scotty was a prominent figure in Nauruan politics, engaging in public service for over three decades. He first entered parliament in 1983, representing the Anabar, Ijuw, and Anibare constituency, a position he held for a significant portion of his career. Throughout his time in office, he served two non-consecutive terms as president, with his first term from May to August 2003 and his second from June 2004 to December 2007.
Scotty was dedicated to enacting economic reforms aimed at alleviating Nauru’s financial issues, becoming the first president of the nation to separate the roles of president and foreign minister. His leadership extended beyond the presidency; he held multiple terms as Speaker of Parliament between 2000 and 2011, and managed important ministerial portfolios, including Health and Justice.
He leaves behind his wife and seven children, marking the end of a significant chapter in Nauruan history with his contributions to the nation’s governance. The legacy he leaves continues to impact the political landscape of Nauru.
