Nauru continues to uphold the one-China principle, as affirmed by Lionel Aingimea, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, following the inauguration of Nauru’s embassy in Beijing. Aingimea emphasized Nauru’s recognition of China’s sovereignty over all its territories, including Taiwan, and expressed his hope that other Pacific nations would adopt this principle.
In comments made to China Media Group, Aingimea stated, “For us, the one-China principle is recognizing that the People’s Republic of China is sovereign over all its territories, including Taiwan, the province of China.” He expressed a desire for supportive recognition from other Pacific nations, indicating that embracing this principle could be vital for their development as well.
The year has been marked by pragmatic cooperation between the two countries. Aingimea noted successful collaborations in fields such as education, health, culture, and infrastructure. He characterized the relationship with China as one of partnership where smaller nations are treated with respect and equality. “China treats me in the same way it treats every other single foreign minister,” he stated.
Nauru restored its diplomatic ties with China on January 24, 2024, making it the 183rd nation to establish relations with China, based on the one-China principle. This shift has prompted a series of positive developments, including discussions about broadening cooperation across various sectors, signifying a brighter future for bilateral relations.
This relationship not only highlights the mutual respect and commitment between Nauru and China but also sets the foundation for future growth and development in the Pacific region. As both nations aim for collaborative efforts to tackle shared challenges, there is a hopeful outlook for further positive strides in their bilateral partnership.
