The Anti-Pornography Taskforce is intensifying efforts for enhanced national and global action aimed at safeguarding children from online sexual exploitation. Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua emphasizes that the increasing prevalence of internet and mobile phone usage has created greater risks for young individuals, as these digital platforms are being exploited by offenders.
Naivalurua outlines that the Taskforce is concentrating on three key areas: establishing robust policies, providing support, and fostering collaboration. “This aligns with a global approach that includes strong policy and legislative frameworks, survivor support and empowerment, as well as cultural transformation,” he stated.
To further their mission, the newly established unit will employ technology-driven strategies designed to detect, prevent, and respond to instances of online abuse. “Its role includes enhancing collaboration with industry partners to develop coordinated and technology-driven methods for addressing online child sexual abuse and exploitation,” Naivalurua explained.
Opposition MP Jone Usamate expressed his support for the Taskforce’s initiatives while cautioning about the broader societal implications of pornography. He noted, “The impact on the country can be very traumatic. Abuse and sexual exploitation risk becoming normalized, which poses a significant danger.”
The taskforce, co-chaired by Naivalurua and the Minister for Children, plans to convene soon to evaluate their progress and map out additional steps forward. With these ongoing efforts, there is hope for a future where children’s safety online is prioritized and protected.
