Nathaniel Lilidamu, a partially sighted Year 10 student at Gospel High School, celebrated a significant milestone yesterday as he graduated from the two-year English Access Microscholarship program in Suva. The graduation ceremony, held at the Latter-day Saints Church, recognized the achievements of 37 students from Gospel High School and Ratu Latianara College in Serua.

Nathaniel reflected on his transformation throughout the program, expressing how it has helped him grow from a shy individual into someone more confident and ready to tackle public speaking. He emphasized the deep friendships he formed during this journey, stating, “We are really going to miss each other.”

His grandmother, Anaseini Lilidamu, shared her gratitude for the positive changes she observed in Nathaniel. “I thank God for my grandson’s life and the opportunity he had to be a part of this program,” she remarked, noting his increased independence and capability. She also extended her thanks to the US Embassy for promoting opportunities for students with special needs.

Program coordinator Gazala Akbar provided additional context, revealing that the program started with 40 students, of which 37 successfully graduated. She remarked on the various enjoyable activities incorporated into the program, including camping trips and movie outings, which played a part in building the students’ confidence.

The English Access Microscholarship program, which runs from January 2023 to December 2024, aims to improve English skills through innovative methods that blend community service, digital learning, personal development, and cultural education about the United States.

John Degory, Deputy Chief of Mission, congratulated the graduates and reaffirmed the US government’s dedication to empowering students through education. He highlighted that the skills and friendships gained from the program would pave the way for future opportunities, emphasizing the pride and humility of the United States in supporting their achievements.

The ceremony not only highlighted the students’ academic successes but also celebrated their personal growth and resilience, indicating a bright future ahead for all graduates.

This inspiring story sheds light on the importance of educational programs that support students with special needs and the significant impact they can have on individual lives, fostering confidence and independence while building community ties.
