The Fijian Drua are gearing up for a crucial match against the formidable Hurricanes in Lautoka on Saturday, with key adjustments expected in the starting line-up as the team looks to break a two-match losing streak. The Drua, still seeking their first win of the season, aim to turn the tide against a Hurricanes side that is riding high after a convincing 52-10 victory over Moana Pasifika last Friday.
Despite the setbacks in the opening rounds, head coach Glen Jackson expressed optimism about the upcoming challenge. He noted, “It’s going to be a great game. There’s a fair bit of rain around, and that will bring the heat down. It will be awesome to have a massive crowd. Everyone knows we love to play in the wet. We’ve always had pretty good games against the Hurricanes. They are a good team to have here and we are looking forward to it.”
A significant change in the lineup includes the debut of sevens star Joji Nasova, who will take the wing position. Jackson highlighted Nasova’s promising transition into the Flying Fijians and expressed enthusiasm about his performance. “He is a quality player and quality man. It’s going to be great to get onto the field,” Jackson stated.
However, the Drua are facing injury challenges, as co-captain Temo Mayanavanua will miss approximately six weeks due to a knee injury sustained in their match against the Waratahs. Jackson acknowledged the impact of Mayanavanua’s absence, emphasizing his leadership and commitment to the team.
In addition to the current roster challenges, the Drua received noteworthy news from the Fijiana Drua camp. Key players Elia Canakaivata and Ponipate Loganimasi have signed with the Sale Sharks in the United Kingdom, marking a significant transition for both players. Jackson commended their contributions, stating, “Elia has been unbelievable… Losing quality players like that is not ideal for us.” While their departure is a setback, the success of these players reflects positively on the Drua’s program and the potential for further talent development.
The highly anticipated match against the Hurricanes is set to kick off at 3:35 PM Fiji Time on Saturday at Churchill Park, Lautoka, as the Drua look to harness the support of their fans and emerge victorious.
