The Nasinu Women’s Rugby team has established itself as a formidable contender in the Fiji Sports Council’s under-20 7s tournament. They have successfully advanced to their fifth final after a strong 10-0 win against the Lilian Amazon team in the semi-finals held yesterday.
Head coach Tomasi Katonivualiku shared his thoughts on the team’s impressive performance throughout the tournament. They have achieved victories in various legs, including Nadroga, Savusavu, and Rakiraki, while finishing as runners-up in Thompson Park in Navua.
Katonivualiku emphasized the team’s focus on taking each match step by step, saying, “We took every match one at a time, coming in slowly and working through all our matches.” This disciplined approach has clearly paid off as they continue to excel.
Despite losing some key players to the national team in Dubai and Rugby League, the team has welcomed new talent that has enhanced their overall performance and unity. “We have a few new girls that joined the team this year due to some players being chosen for the national team and others moving to Rugby League. We are fortunate these new girls stepped up to be part of this team,” remarked Katonivualiku.
The rigorous training and commitment shown by all players have been crucial to their success, fostering a positive attitude and heightened confidence among the team members.
Overall, the journey of the Nasinu Women’s Rugby team reflects resilience and the spirit of teamwork. As they prepare for the final, their story serves as an inspiration to young athletes aiming to make their mark in sports. With determination and collaborative effort, they are well-positioned to achieve even greater heights in the future.
