The Nasinu Women’s Rugby team has established itself as a formidable contender in the Fiji Sports Council’s under-20 7s tournament, advancing to their fifth final after a solid 10-0 win against the Lilian Amazon team in the semi-finals held yesterday.
Head coach Tomasi Katonivualiku praised the team’s impressive journey, highlighting their consistent performance throughout the tournament. They achieved victories in the Nadroga, Savusavu, and Rakiraki events, while also finishing as runners-up at Thompson Park in Navua.
“We took every match one at a time, coming in slowly and working through all our matches,” Katonivualiku noted.
Despite facing challenges due to some players being selected for the national team in Dubai or opting for Rugby League, the inclusion of new talents has reinforced the team’s overall strength and unity.
“We have a few new girls that joined the team this year, as some of our players have been chosen for the national team in Dubai, and others went to Rugby League. We are fortunate that these girls have stepped up to be part of the team,” he added.
Katonivualiku emphasized the importance of the players’ hard work and commitment during training, which has played a crucial role in their success, instilling a palpable sense of confidence within the squad.
This impressive run by the Nasinu Women’s Rugby team not only showcases their talent and determination but also highlights the bright future of women’s rugby in Fiji. With a strong foundation and the emergence of new players, the team appears poised for continued success on the field.
