The Nasinu Secondary School Under-18 rugby team has reached the Vodafone Deans Trophy semifinals for the first time in 12 years. The last time they advanced past the quarterfinals was in 2012. This Saturday, the Southern Zone champions will compete against Cuvu College at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium after a narrow victory over Tailevu North College, winning 17-13 in the quarterfinals.
Coach Semisi Yasiyasi praised the team’s dedication and hard work, noting that the boys have made sacrifices to reach this stage, while also maintaining a humble attitude despite their confidence. He acknowledged the challenge presented by Cuvu College, which recently defeated Ratu Kadavulevu School 23-22.
Yasiyasi plans to focus on improving specific areas of their game in preparation for the semifinal. Over the years, Nasinu Secondary School has produced several prominent rugby players, including Lemeki Koroi, Setareki Tawake, former France winger Virimi Vakatawa, Sakeo Raloa, and current Wallabies winger Marika Koroibete. He also called on former students, parents, and guardians to support the team in their upcoming match.
