The Nasinu Town Council has initiated a forensic audit to tackle serious concerns over financial mismanagement by previous administrations. Council Executive Chairman Felix Magnus announced that the audit will scrutinize financial records from 2018 to 2020, following alarming findings in the Auditor General’s reports highlighting significant misuse of Council funds.
Magnus presented this update to the Public Accounts Committee, expressing the Council’s dedication to accountability and responsible governance. He emphasized, “We are here to set things right. The misappropriation of millions has compromised essential services, and the people of Nasinu have suffered.” He pledged that the audit would reveal the full extent of these issues, promising to implement measures to prevent recurrence.
The forensic audit, backed by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Finance, will focus on critical areas such as cash controls, payroll, asset management, project oversight, and regulatory compliance. Magnus believes this will provide a robust foundation for financial integrity in future operations. He stated, “Our objective is to finally secure an Unqualified Opinion on Nasinu’s accounts, and we are working relentlessly to achieve that.”
Furthermore, any identified cases of mismanagement will be escalated to relevant authorities, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), for further investigation.
This initiative represents a significant step toward restoring public trust and ensuring that funds are used effectively for the benefit of the community. With strong oversight and a commitment to transparency, the Nasinu Town Council is working diligently to foster a culture of accountability that can lead to improved services and enhanced community well-being.
