The Nasinu Town Council has initiated a forensic audit to tackle serious concerns regarding financial mismanagement from prior administrations. Council Executive Chairman Felix Magnus announced this measure to the Public Accounts Committee, providing assurance of the Council’s dedication to transparency and responsible governance.
According to Magnus, the forensic audit will scrutinize financial records from 2018 to 2020, in light of the Auditor General’s reports that highlighted significant concerns about the misuse of Council funds. He emphasized the necessity of this audit, stating that the misappropriation of funds has negatively impacted essential services, ultimately affecting the community of Nasinu.
Magnus expressed determination to rectify these past issues, stating, “We are here to set things right. This audit will uncover the full extent of these issues, and we will take the necessary actions to ensure it never happens again.” The audit, backed by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Finance, will assess various aspects, including cash controls, payroll, asset management, project oversight, and adherence to regulations.
The aim of this initiative is to establish a strong foundation for financial integrity going forward. Magnus noted that the ultimate goal is to secure an Unqualified Opinion on the accounts of Nasinu, and he reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to working tirelessly to achieve this objective. He also indicated that any detected instances of mismanagement would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
This proactive approach reflects the Council’s commitment to improving governance and restoring public trust, indicating a positive path ahead for the financial health of Nasinu Town. By addressing these issues transparently and decisively, the Council aims to foster a more accountable and responsible local government.
In summary, the Nasinu Town Council’s forensic audit is a crucial step toward addressing past financial mismanagement, promoting accountability, and enhancing the community’s trust in local governance.
