The Nasinu Town Council has initiated a forensic audit in response to serious financial mismanagement concerns highlighted in previous administrations. Council Executive Chairman Felix Magnus revealed that the audit will scrutinize financial records from 2018 to 2020, following alarming findings from the Auditor General’s reports regarding the misuse of council funds.
During a presentation to the Public Accounts Committee, Magnus emphasized the Council’s dedication to accountability and responsible governance. He stated, “We are here to set things right. The misappropriation of millions has compromised essential services, and the people of Nasinu have suffered.” The audit aims to uncover the full scope of these issues, allowing the Council to take necessary actions to prevent future occurrences.
This forensic audit, which is being backed by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Finance, will focus on critical areas such as cash controls, payroll management, asset oversight, project management, and compliance with regulations. Magnus believes that this initiative will lay a strong groundwork for financial integrity in the Council’s future operations.
“Our objective is to finally secure an Unqualified Opinion on Nasinu’s accounts, and we are working relentlessly to achieve that,” Magnus asserted. Furthermore, he indicated that any identified cases of mismanagement would be escalated to the appropriate authorities, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
In summary, the Nasinu Town Council’s decision to conduct a forensic audit reflects a proactive approach towards rectifying financial discrepancies and restoring public trust. This commitment to transparency and accountability serves as a hopeful step towards a more robust governance framework in Nasinu, ultimately benefiting citizens and ensuring that essential services are maintained and safeguarded.
