The Nasinu Town Council has initiated a forensic audit aimed at addressing serious financial mismanagement issues that have come to light from previous administrations. Council Executive Chairman Felix Magnus announced this initiative during a presentation to the Public Accounts Committee, indicating that the audit will scrutinize financial records spanning from 2018 to 2020. This decision follows reports from the Auditor General, which identified significant concerns regarding the misuse of Council funds.
Magnus expressed the Council’s ongoing commitment to accountability and responsible governance, stating, “We are here to set things right. The misappropriation of millions has compromised essential services, and the people of Nasinu have suffered.” He emphasized that the audit intends to fully uncover the extent of any financial irregularities and ensure measures are in place to prevent future occurrences.
The forensic audit, which is being supported by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Finance, will concentrate on several critical areas, including cash controls, payroll systems, asset management, project oversight, and adherence to regulatory compliance. Magnus believes that this comprehensive analysis will create a strong ethical framework for future financial operations in Nasinu.
“Our objective is to finally secure an Unqualified Opinion on Nasinu’s accounts, and we are working relentlessly to achieve that,” Magnus declared. Furthermore, he assured that any identified instances of mismanagement will be escalated to the appropriate authorities, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), for further investigation.
In summary, this audit represents a significant step towards restoring financial integrity and accountability in the Nasinu Town Council, ultimately aiming to enhance public trust and ensure better services for the community. The proactive stance taken by the current administration sets a hopeful precedent for transparency and ethical governance, demonstrating a commitment to righting past wrongs and fostering a brighter future for all residents.
