The Nasinu Town Council has initiated a forensic audit to tackle significant concerns regarding financial mismanagement stemming from past administrations. Council Executive Chairman Felix Magnus reported that the audit will scrutinize financial documents from 2018 to 2020 in response to alarming findings from the Auditor General’s reports, which indicated possible misuse of Council funds.
During a session with the Public Accounts Committee, Magnus expressed the Council’s dedication to accountability and responsible governance, stating, “We are here to set things right. The misappropriation of millions has compromised essential services, and the people of Nasinu have suffered.” He emphasized that this audit aims to reveal the full scope of the issues and ensure measures are implemented to prevent future occurrences.
Supported by the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Finance, the forensic audit will concentrate on key areas such as cash controls, payroll management, asset oversight, project management, and adherence to regulations. Magnus indicated that the results of this audit are essential for building a robust foundation for financial integrity in future operations.
“Our objective is to finally secure an Unqualified Opinion on Nasinu’s accounts, and we are working relentlessly to achieve that,” Magnus affirmed, underscoring the commitment to rectify past issues. Additionally, any discovered instances of mismanagement will be escalated for investigation by appropriate authorities, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
This proactive approach by the Nasinu Town Council demonstrates a commitment to transparency and improvement, fostering hope for a more accountable governance structure that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens. As the audit progresses, it holds the promise of restoring trust and enhancing essential services that have been compromised in the past.
