The Nasinu Town Council is set to enhance security and address issues of crime and illegal dumping in the municipality by installing 40 high-tech surveillance cameras across identified hotspot areas. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Vodafone Fiji Limited, the Fiji Police Force, and the Nasinu Charitable Trust.

The project aims to bolster safety in neighborhoods that have been previously recognized as crime-prone, including Caubati, Nepani, Nadawa, Kalabu, Narere, and Navosai. NTC chairman Felix Magnus emphasized that the primary objective is to make Nasinu a safer and cleaner place for residents. “These cameras are not about spying,” he clarified, stating they are intended as a protective measure to deter criminal activities and illegal waste disposal.

This initiative is part of the wider ‘Hands Across Nasinu’ program, which focuses on collaborative efforts to combat drug-related crimes and improve community safety. The implementation of surveillance cameras follows consultation with local policing teams, reflecting a strategic approach to urban safety.

Magnus noted that the plan has already shown promise in transforming Nasinu from a so-called red zone of crime into a green zone, showcasing the community’s progress. With the rollout of 24/7 surveillance, the initiative seeks to reinforce the message to potential offenders: “You are being watched.”

The expectation is that the enhanced surveillance will not only discourage criminal activities but will also instill civic pride among residents, potentially leading to improved environmental practices. Such community-focused initiatives have been highlighted in recent reports, noting the importance of collective responsibility towards creating a cleaner and safer living environment.

This proactive response to local safety and cleanliness issues showcases a hopeful vision for the future of Nasinu—one where residents can feel secure in their homes and take pride in their community. The installation of these cameras reflects a commitment to utilizing technology for the benefit of public safety and environmental stewardship.
