After a 12-year wait, the Nasinu Secondary School Under-18 rugby team has advanced past the Vodafone Deans Trophy quarterfinals. Coach Semisi Yasiyasi noted that the team’s last quarterfinal appearance was in 2012.
This Saturday, the Southern Zone champions will compete against Cuvu College in the Deans Trophy semifinal at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The team earned their spot in the semifinals after a hard-fought victory over Tailevu North College, with a score of 17-13.
“Reaching this stage is a testament to the boys’ hard work and dedication,” Yasiyasi stated. He emphasized that while the players are confident, they have chosen to remain humble and recognize the sacrifices made by the team.
Yasiyasi acknowledged the strength of their upcoming opponent, Cuvu College, who pulled off a surprise victory against Ratu Kadavulevu School, winning 23-22. “This week, we will focus on refining certain aspects of our game,” he added.
Over the years, Nasinu Secondary School has produced several prominent rugby players, including Lemeki Koroi, Setareki Tawake, former France winger Virimi Vakatawa, Sakeo Raloa, and current Wallabies wing Marika Koroibete.
Yasiyasi has called on former students, parents, and guardians of Nasinu Secondary School to support the team in their upcoming semifinal match.
