The Nasinu Town Council is taking proactive measures to combat the rising cases of dengue fever in the community, which has been exacerbated by recent heavy rains and flooding that have created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. Chair Felix Magnus has emphasized the vital role of environmental cleanliness in preventing the spread of diseases such as dengue, urging residents to participate in community clean-up efforts.

In a recent video statement, Mr. Magnus outlined the significant threat posed by the Aedes mosquito, which breeds in stagnant water. He encouraged community members to regularly clean their surroundings, unblock gutters, and properly dispose of items that could collect water. “To protect our families, every action we take matters,” he stated, stressing the need for collective action.

Collaborations with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment have been established to organize ward-to-ward clean-up campaigns over the next two weeks. These campaigns will include scheduled events, such as a clean-up along River Rd and activities in New Town, aimed at fostering community involvement in the fight against dengue.

The recent initiatives in Nasinu echo previous strategies seen in other areas of Fiji, where local authorities have recognized the importance of public participation in controlling dengue outbreaks. Similar campaigns have successfully mobilized communities across the nation, highlighting the crucial role of collective efforts in maintaining a cleaner environment and reducing mosquito populations.

Mr. Magnus’s call to action is a reminder that while the council and government agencies are addressing current cases of dengue, it is imperative that all community members contribute actively to this public health challenge. The ongoing commitment from residents to maintain cleanliness and engage in these preventive measures offers hope for a healthier and safer environment.

As communities unite in these efforts, the importance of education and proactive engagement underscores a positive, collective approach to effectively tackling the threat of dengue fever and enhancing public health across Fiji.
