The Nasinu Secondary School Old Boys team showcased their promising talents in their first major tournament, marking a significant achievement by competing in the final leg of the Fiji Sports Council’s under-20 7s tournament. Their exemplary performance led them to victory against the Lami Cavaliers with a score of 14-0 in the Bowl quarter-final match at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Head coach Digitaki Leavaci noted that this team is composed of players from the current under-18 Deans team, emphasizing the significance of their participation in such a prestigious tournament. He expressed that reaching the Bowl quarter-final was an unexpected success, providing invaluable lessons for the players involved in the Fiji Sports Council’s competition.
Coach Leavaci mentioned the challenges faced in preparing for the tournament, particularly due to the players’ commitments to their schooling, which resulted in low attendance at training sessions. Despite these obstacles, he recognized the potential talent within the group, believing that this tournament offered a crucial opportunity for them to shine.
Looking ahead, the team has set its sights on competing in the Fiji Bitter 7s series U20 and is proactively establishing training programs to enhance their competitiveness. Coach Leavaci underlined their motivation, stating, “This tournament is just the beginning—we want to see how we can measure up against the top teams and show just how much we can achieve.”
This promising development highlights the dedication and potential of young athletes in Fiji, showcasing the exciting future of rugby in the region. With strategic planning and commitment, the Nasinu Secondary School Old Boys team aims to continue building on their recent successes and compete at even higher levels in the future.
