The Nasinu Town Council is intensifying its efforts to combat illegal dumping and improper waste disposal by issuing fines and warnings to both homeowners and vehicle owners this week. In its proactive approach, the council has distributed Removal Notices for abandoned vehicles particularly on Vatoa and FNTC Road in Narere, while also tracking and penalizing residents who have been caught discarding refuse overnight along the roads in Nadawa.

According to the council, these derelict vehicles not only detract from the aesthetic appeal of the area but also present significant health and safety hazards, such as providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes, obstructing traffic, and potentially introducing environmental dangers. Garage and vehicle owners have been reminded that leaving vehicles unattended on public roads or reserves is illegal.

The council has warned that non-compliance with removal notices could lead to enforcement actions that include fines, towing at the owner’s expense, and possible legal action under existing council bylaws. They emphasize that abandoned vehicles hinder access for emergency services and pedestrians, serve as dumping sites for waste and hazardous materials, and can devalue the properties in the community.

The council is calling on owners to take immediate responsibility for the removal of these vehicles to improve community standards. In addressing the rubbish situation in Nadawa, the council highlighted the financial burden caused by irresponsible waste disposal. They stated, “Every illegal heap means extra trucks, extra hours, and extra ratepayers’ money.”

Enforcement teams have been deployed to the affected areas to track offenders and issue fines as per the council regulations. The council expressed gratitude to residents who reported these issues, underscoring the importance of community vigilance.

They reiterated that illegal dumping is a serious violation with consequences that may include immediate fines and adverse legal outcomes for repeat offenders. Cleanup expenses might also be reclaimed from those responsible for illegal dumping activities.

The council made a heartfelt request for residents to collaborate in maintaining cleanliness in Nasinu by adhering to official waste collection schedules and utilizing designated bins. They advised against placing household or commercial waste in inappropriate locations like verges, drains, or vacant lots.

Residents are encouraged to report illegal dumping incidents with documentation, including photos, dates, and locations through the council’s communication channels. In doing so, the council believes that together, the community can demonstrate pride in their streets, safeguard the environment, and show respect for their neighbors.
